[ARCHIVED] Upcoming Winter Storm - Keeping Township Roads Clear

The Township's Community Services Department is closely watching this weekend's winter storm forecasts, and we are ready.  Listed below is some helpful information/tips regarding snow/ice control through the winter months.

The Department of Community Services keeps township roads clean and safe during a snowfall by plowing roadways and using chemical treatments that melt snow and ice on the pavement. Roads are cleaned in priority order, beginning first with major arteries, then moving to secondary roadways, and finally cleaning residential streets

The Department makes every effort to keep all Township roads clean, but in cases of unpredicted or quickly falling snow it may take time for crews to make it to residential roads. The Department of Community Services is responsible for clearing snow and ice for over 80 miles of Township roads during the winter months.  The Township, acting as an independent contractor, is reimbursed by PennDOT for snow removal on 20.25 miles of State roads (the Township does not maintain Route 8 for snow and ice removal). Middle Road and Duncan Avenue are maintained by Allegheny County.

Here are some tips in dealing with winter snow/ice storms:

- Clear Township roadways of any parked cars.  If this is not possible, please leave adequate adequate clearance for the truck and snow plow.

- Refrain from placing garbage/recycling cans for Monday pick up until Sunday evening when streets are cleared.

- Do not shovel or blow snow from your driveway back into the street.  This creates hazardous conditions for all vehicles.

- If there is a fire hydrant located on your property, please remember to clear a path from the hydrant to the street.
