[ARCHIVED] Fraud

On December 21, 2020 at 2:35 p.m., a resident from AuSable Drive contacted Hampton Township Police to report an attempted phone scam. The resident advised that they received a text message from a phone number that accused them of participating in illegal acts. The unknown person that sent the text requested that the resident pay a fine or else they would be in trouble. The unknown actor sent graphic photographs of what appeared to be dead bodies and threatened harm upon the resident's family if they refused to pay the fine. This is a common phone scam that is used to frighten people into sending money. The resident was aware that the messages were a scam, but wanted to file a police report of the concerning incident.
