On May 10, the Hampton Township Police were notified of a "CATFISHING" type scam. A resident reported that he decided to purchase a vehicle that he found on Facebook Marketplace, and he messaged the seller who requested a deposit of $150.00 to come see the vehicle. After sending the deposit via Chime he went to the address provided and the people who lived there were not selling any vehicles.
The resident was advised to contact CHIME and try to retrieve his $150. It was explained that the suspects did not use their true names and how “CATFISHING” scams work.
