On April 19, 2017 at 8:41 p.m., Hampton Township Police received a fraud report from a resident from Bucktail Drive. The reporting party stated that they had been using their computer a few months prior when a message popped up to contact technical support. The resident did call the number and paid to have their computer "fixed". A few months later, they received a phone call from an individual from the technical support company, and they stated that they wanted to refund money into the resident's bank account. They advised the reporting party to download certain software in order to complete the process. The resident provided account information, downloaded software, and realized that money was being taken out of their account instead of being put in. The individual was also advised to purchase gift cards in order to remedy the situation, which further added to the scam. The reporting party had been advised to notify their bank in order to cancel the associated bank accounts and to report the fraud on FTC.gov.
