[ARCHIVED] Fraud

On December 5, 2014 at 5:00 PM Hampton Twp Police responded to a possible phone scam. Upon speaking with the caller, she explained that she received a voicemail from someone with a very strong middle eastern/ Indian accent stating that they were from the US Department of Treasury, that she owed them money, and if she did not pay the amount requested, that there would be a warrant for her arrest. The man stated that she needed to call him back to remedy the situation and that she should have an attorney with her when she makes the phone call. The caller was advised that there have been many phone scams going on that are very similar, and that if any government agency was trying to actually contact her in regards to unpaid taxes or for collecting a debt of any sort, that she would have received paperwork through the mail. I advised her to ignore any further calls or voice messages from the number she provided me (760-897-3174).
