For the 20th consecutive year, beginning July 29 and running through August 31, the Allegheny County Health Department and USDA Wildlife Services will distribute raccoon rabies vaccine baits across Allegheny County. Baits will be delivered both by hand from ground vehicles, by helicopter, and by fixed wing airplane. This effort helps reduce raccoon rabies, as well as human and pet exposures to rabid animals.
During this time, please keep your dog on a leash, indoors or confined to your property as much as possible during baiting and the week after. The risk of adverse effects to humans and animals due to exposure to the vaccine is minimal, but the ACHD and Township urge the public to avoid contact with the bait if possible. The attached flyers provide additional information regarding this program.
